This past weekend the San Francisco Radio Club was enlisted to support the Kaiser Half Marathon in San Francisco. In addition to the numerous ham radio resources that were utilized, the San Francisco Wireless Emergency Mesh also played an important role in passing timely information from various points around the race.
For this event, the existing SFWEM infrastructure was utilized, in addition to a command-post node within Golden Gate Park, and two portable camera stations at different ends of the race. We were able to stream live video from two remote sites and present it to the all of the unified command staff at the command post.
Overall this was a great exercise in putting the mesh into an operational role, and tested our ability to deploy and manage field nodes. Feedback was great from our partner agencies, and we’re already getting requests for future events.
