Code of Conduct

On Tuesday, May 3rd, 2022, the SFWEM Board approved the Code of Conduct.

While it’s expected that all collaborators in the SFWEM project participate in good faith, differences-of-opinion and conflict are a given within any organization. Individuals should attempt to resolve these conflicts directly and with respect. If collaborators are unable to resolve conflicts directly, they should contact the SFWEM board. The SFWEM board will take steps to enforce the Code of Conduct.

Code of Conduct

Collaborators will support a friendly, supportive volunteer environment that will reflect positively upon the Bay Area Mesh (fka SFWEM), its collaborators, and amateur radio generally. Collaborators will act with integrity and honesty. Collaborators will be trustworthy and respectful, keep their commitments, and be accountable for their own actions. Collaborators will refrain from harassing, bullying, intimidating, demeaning, humiliating, embarrassing, or attacking another person visually, verbally, or physically.

SFWEM Enables Disaster Communications with Grant from ARDC

SFWEM Enables Disaster Communications with Grant from ARDC

SFWEM received a $100k grant from ARDC to expand a high-speed wireless network throughout San Francisco and the greater Bay Area during disasters, emergencies, and large community events. The network serves responders, volunteers, and government agencies.

This grant coincides with the formation of SFWEM as a 501(c)(3). It enables furthering the project's mission to serve as a force multiplier for education, research, and disaster response using digital communications capabilities. Given its tax-deductible status, it will also allow for future charitable contributions to assist in its continued expansion.

Hello Chabot!

It’s been an incredible month of growth for SFWEM. We’ve nearly doubled the size of the network as we approach 70 nodes, and we’ve added 3 new cross-bay links. One of our most noteworthy additions is the Chabot Space & Science Museum in the Oakland hills.

Chabot is located in an area of Oakland that is no stranger to disaster, having suffered from the 1991 fire storm. It’s for this reason that particular & deliberate attention is paid during high wind periods, hot weather, and power outages. Chabot stands up a “fire watch” during these periods, where a human must be on the campus 24 hours a day to watch for fire spark-ups. Unfortunately during the recent Public Safety Power Shutoffs, a gap was exposed in the inability to communicate into and out of this area during a power outage, in particular, if a fire spark-up is witnessed, the “fire watch” must drive to the closest fire station for help.

SFWEM at the Kaiser Half Marathon

This past weekend the San Francisco Radio Club was enlisted to support the Kaiser Half Marathon in San Francisco. In addition to the numerous ham radio resources that were utilized, the San Francisco Wireless Emergency Mesh also played an important role in passing timely information from various points around the race.

For this event, the existing SFWEM infrastructure was utilized, in addition to a command-post node within Golden Gate Park, and two portable camera stations at different ends of the race. We were able to stream live video from two remote sites and present it to the all of the unified command staff at the command post.
